Liberal Arts Faculty Endowed Scholarship
Elizabeth Lander Purcell came from a family of educators and believes that education is a key component to a happy life. Elizabeth retired from Greenville Technical College after a tenure of 14 years as a psychology faculty member. Dr. Purcell has established this fund to further educational opportunities for students who are following a liberal arts track in their education and are seeking a less traditional, but equally fulfilling, career path. It is her belief that studies focused on the humanities prepare students to enter a dynamic future as informed citizens, productive professionals, and lifelong learners through courses that promote creativity, artistic expression, research and critical thought. Furthermore, courses covering areas like history, literature, philosophy and the arts help our students understand different cultures, perspectives, and the historical context of human development, fostering empathy and social awareness.
Students eligible for this scholarship are those enrolled in certificate, diploma, degree, or vocational programs at the College. A student must maintain at least a “C” average or 2.0 GPA at the College, or from previous high school or college academic work if not previously enrolled at the College. The Committee may override this requirement for special circumstances. Preference will be given to students seeking an Associate in Arts, which provides an interdisciplinary educational experience with broad-based degree options, general education courses, opportunities for undergraduate research and global education. Top priority will be given to students planning to transfer upon completion of the Associate in Arts degree at Greenville Technical College and pursue a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Anthropology, Art History, English Literature, History, Languages, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, or Visual Arts.
