Barbara Cubitt Massey Nursing Scholarship

Barbara was born in Spartanburg, SC, where as a teen, she decided that she would become a nurse. Following high school, she entered the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing. After graduating, she worked in Pediatrics at Greenville General and Johnson City (TN) Memorial. Upon returning to Greenville she taught at the Greenville General Hospital School for ten years before enrolling at the University of South Carolina, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science Degree and her Master’s Degree in Nursing. Her career continued at the Greenville Hospital System, where she served as Clinical Director of Pediatrics and later the Director of Nursing for the GHS Children’s Hospital. Driven by her passion of caring for the needs of the whole person, following retirement she attended the Divinity School at Gardner-Webb University focusing on Pastoral Care and Counseling. Barbara resides in Greenville and remains very active in a Spiritual Care Ministry that she developed, including Grief Support groups, in multiple sites throughout Greenville County.

Students eligible for this scholarship are those enrolled in certificate, diploma, degree, or vocational programs at the College. A student must have and maintain at least a “C” average or 2.0 GPA at the College, or from previous high school or college academic work if not previously enrolled at the College. The Committee may override this requirement for special circumstances.· For this scholarship, the Committee will give preference to students who are in financial need and enrolled in the Nursing Program at Greenville Technical College, who indicate a desire to obtain a BSN, and who meet the Nursing program’s criteria to be considered BSN Bound. Students may be enrolled as part time or full time.
